This is What to do with Your Cherished Family Heirlooms
/Part 2 in the series on what to do with special mementos. Here’s some unique ideas to make use of and honor those special pieces. Enjoy these items more often and summon the wonderful memories they evoke.
Anything can become a necklace
Previously, I wrote about a unique way to display cherished family photos. You can check out that article HERE. In this post we’ll look at family mementos and jewelry.
I would’ve received a partial failing grade in any Marie Kondo class. But the upside is… I’d get a partial pass.
Organizing gives me a thrill. I will find a way to use or give away anything not being used or worn. It bothers me to have things and not wear or use them. I’m a big believer in selling, refurbishing or donating things that someone else might love instead of having them wasting away, unused, in some dark cabinet. Check out my DIY posts for proof HERE. This is where I get an A+.
But I come to a dead stop when it comes to sentimental or valuable pieces. That’s where my grade is an F.
These days, I’m holding fewer luncheons, fundraisers and formal dinner parties. My family is spread out so holiday gatherings are more informal. And I don’t attend every Mardi Gras ball as I, once, did.
I don’t use my full formal set of sterling flatware, porcelain, crystal and linens often. I have enough to go full on Downton Abbey… should the need arise.
I love using my beautiful pieces but our lives have gotten simpler when it comes to entertaining. Now it’s football parties, BYOB your fav wine and cheese or sushi in the courtyard.
I wonder about future generations. Will our children set a full formal table as much as we did? Will 3 forks, 3 spoons, 3 crystal goblets, silver fish and individual butter knives go the way of the landline? With both parents working will dishwasher-safe, stainless steel, cut glass and china be the go-to for future families who feel that silver polishing and fragile pieces hand washing a waste of time?
For right now I’m clinging to my table wear but what about jewelry or sentimental items you inherit?
For me, its so difficult to part with these items inherited from my parents and grandparents. Part of the reason is because I knew how much my relatives cherished these pieces. Another is they’re more complicated to resell. You must can’t toss them to your local consignment shop or or resale website. They require appraisals and contacting specialty shops or auction sites. Some have no intrinsic monetary value and I hate to discard them carelessly.

Breakdown individual pieces and make charm bracelets
I still love charm bracelets. They never go out of style.s You can dismantle medals, coins, pins, awards or former pendants and add them to bracelets. A jeweler can add rings and attach them for you. Or, if you’re feeling bold, purchase jewelry making pieces from your local hobby store and DIY it. I’ve added tie tacks, old lockets and gifts to these charmers.

2. Take unusual pieces and make into pendant necklaces of all lengths
I used my father’s money clip and napkin ring to make pendants. Anything and everything can be made into jewelry. I even used an old belt buckle of my grandfather’s with his baby pin to make a striking necklace. You can add items to a chain. Or you can purchase leather cording, in various colors, at Hobby Lobby and knot it. It’s oh-so easy and inexpensive to accomplish.
No clasp needed - just imagination!
Tips for Better Living with DIY
Use and enjoy your cherished heirlooms instead of letting the hide away in a drawer. Re-design special pieces and wear them more often. Savor the wonderful memories they evoke.
